Study #5: God tells us how to respect others.
Bible Study: God Gives the Ten Commandments (Part 2)
The Ten Commandments. (b.c. 1491.)
Jesus said: (makes the Bible stronger)
Matthew 19:16-19 16And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
18He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
19Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
The man then told Jesus that he had kept all of the Commandments . . . Jesus told him that if he was then perfect, to sell all of his stuff and give it to the poor . . . As we know, the man sadly turned away . . . for he had great possessions.
our duty to ourselves and to one another
the second great commandment, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
· Matthew 22:35-40 35Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
In other words: RESPECT each other
12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
· Parents only ??
· What are some examples of this ??
o come when they call you
o go where they send you
o do what they ask you
o do not do what they forbid you
o and do it cheerfully and with love
o to be the comfort/pride of their parents, and to make their old age easy to them
o That thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
§ Those that care for their parents will receive their good inheritance (entering Canaan)
§ God will be with them
· Matthew 15:4 For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and mother: and, he that curseth father or mother. Let him die the deat.
· Deuteronomy 5:16 -- "Honor your father and your mother as the LORD your God has commanded you. Then you will live for a long time, and things will go well for you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
13 Thou shalt not kill.
· What are some examples of this ??
· It does not forbid killing in lawful war or in our own necessary defense or putting murderers to death … for these things tend to preserve life
· It forbids persecution, laying wait for the blood of innocent men (first degree murder)
· It forbids all malice and hatred to anyone (for he that hateth his brother is a murderer), and all personal revenge
o Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
· God said to Noah and his sons:
o Genesis 9:6 Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: For in the image of God made he man.
· Leviticus 24:17 -- 'If a man takes the life of any human being, he shall surely be put to death.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
· What are some examples of this ??
· This commandment forbids all acts of uncleanness and lusts (including pornography as well as actual affairs)
· Jesus puts this one in front of Not Killing
o Mark 10:19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.
· And He goes further to say:
o Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
· and ADDS
o Matthew 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
· What are some examples of this ??
· Wasteful spending
· Taking the goods of another
· Not returning what was borrowed .. and in the same condition (value)
· Charging unjust rents, interest-rates, . . .
· Paying unjust wages
· Taking or withholding of charity for others
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
· What are some examples of this ??
· Speaking falsely in any matter: lying, and in any way deceiving others
· Speaking unjustly against others, to the prejudice of his reputation
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
· What are some examples of this ??
· All desire of having that which will be gratifying to ourselves
· Our own discontent
· Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
· 1 Thessalonians 4:2-5 2For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. 3For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from sexual immorality: 4That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; 5Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
Terror with Which the Law Was Given. (vv. 18-19)
The impressions made upon the people:
why was the law given in this dreadful manner, and with all this tremendous ceremony?
· In knowing the terror of the Lord, we may be persuaded to believe and live “in fear”
· It showed the terrors of the general judgment, in which sinners will be called to account for
· It was humbling
· The people 1500 years later were reminded of this time in Hebrews 12:18
· At first they were pushing forward to gaze, now they moved back away
· They didn’t want to hear any more .. they wanted it all to go through Moses from now on . . nominating him as fit and trustworthy
· And even with all of this fear, they quickly reverted back to idolatry in less than 2-months
· SO .. we should be happy to receive God’s Word through Scripture … if we don’t believe it, we probably wouldn’t be persuaded by Him coming directly to us either.
Moses’ reaction. (v. 20)
· Moses calms them
· Ever since Adam fled, upon hearing God's voice in the garden, sinful man could not bear to speak to God or hear from him directly
· God is only showing you the fear you should have … He is not going to hurt you now.
· Psalm 4:4 4Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still
Moses’ action. (v. 21)
· While the people continued to stay afar, conscious of their own guilt/sin and afraid of God, Moses was drawn to god
· The great Mediator . . analogy to Jesus
· Jeremiah 30:21 21And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me? saith the LORD
· Ephesians 3:11,12 11According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: 12In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
The Ten Commandments Written on Stone
Exodus
31:18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
Deuteronomy
9:9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, [even] the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water:
9:10 And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them [was written] according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.
9:11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, [that] the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, [even] the tables of the covenant.
